Our humble beginnings.
My wife was depressed after having children. We had just purchased a Victorian clay brick home (~1890) in the city and we were renovating. She wasn’t into the renovation and didn’t really participate. I asked her to grow some flowers out front. She planted a few hydrangea hesitantly and her love affair with flowers started. She became fascinated with growing and reading about flowers. Soon, everywhere outdoors became covered with plants. The deck which I had the barbecue on, became so covered with pots, that I couldn’t even get to the barbecue. I said enough was enough, we finished the renovation and after a few months sold our city place and moved to the countryside. We purchased a house in poor condition with a good chunk of land. We reinvigorated the soil (compost, manure, and fertilizer) and started growing. At the end of the day, I would say costs exceed what we make. At least by a small amount, but growing offers my wife solace and the money and the labor is worth it in the end. I also experience the cost of commuting to make her dream a reality.
